Areas of Research

The laboratory's work is organized into standing divisions and groups. Descriptions below are general; project-level summaries are released through the publications index after internal review.

Applied Physics Division

Studies in acoustics, optics, thermodynamics, and energy transfer. Recent public work has concerned measurement technique and the design of repeatable classroom demonstrations derived from bench experiments.

Publishes as: TLI-AP series

Materials & Fabrication Division

Testing of material properties under repeated load, and fabrication of prototype components in the laboratory's machine and wood shops. A long-running fatigue study is currently in internal review.

Publishes as: TLI-MF series

Instrumentation Group

Design, calibration, and maintenance of the laboratory's measurement apparatus. The group also prepares simplified instrument plans for use in secondary-school laboratories.

Publishes as: TLI-IN series

Computation Group

Numerical analysis, data reduction, and record-keeping systems in support of the other divisions. The group maintains the laboratory's internal computing facilities.

Internal support group

Field Studies Unit

Observation and data collection conducted away from the main facility, including environmental measurement and acoustic survey work. Site reports are filed with the documentation group upon return.

Publishes as: TLI-FS series

Documentation Group

Preparation and archival of technical notes, site reports, and the annual public summary. The group administers the internal review process on behalf of the Director of Research.

A number of active investigations are not described publicly. The laboratory does not comment on work in progress, and requests for information about unlisted projects will be declined.

From Bench to Publication

All public releases follow the same path: results are reproduced within the originating division, reviewed by the internal board, and prepared for release by the documentation group. The Director of Research approves each release.

This process is deliberate and occasionally slow. The laboratory considers the delay a fair price for accuracy.

  • 1. Reproduction — findings repeated within the division
  • 2. Internal review — board examination of methods and records
  • 3. Preparation — documentation group drafts the note
  • 4. Approval — signed by the Director of Research
  • 5. Release — posted to the publications index
